Promotional materials, photographs, and administrative documents related to AIDS Walk.
The Bary Porter Collection was a gift of Bary Porter on behalf of the Kansas City Heartland Chapter of The NAMES Project Foundation in March 2012. Contained in the collection are documents, publications, programs and articles pertaining to the business workings and events and displays of the Kansas City Chapter, as well as HIV/AIDS awareness issues. Newsletters of the Kansas City Chapter of The NAMES Project Foundation are present, along with meeting minutes, and general Chapter information provide insight into the workings of the short-lived Chapter, and various programs and advertisements for events shed light on the Kansas City Pride scene from the late 1990s through the early 2000s.
Local activists who were instrumental in reviving the Pride festival in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The Bobby Bremer Collection was donated to LaBudde Special Collections by Dr. Jay Wilkinson, a close friend of Bremer, in September 2012; a second donation was made in February 2014. It contains photographs from TAPS bar during the 1990s, parties and trips by Bremer, his partner and friends, Bremer’s commitment ceremony to his first partner at Metropolitan Community Church. These have been reconstructed from four scrapbooks and were re-arranged in a consistent order with reference of the album on the folder. The collection also houses memorabilia from Kansas City bars and the Hotel Muehlebach. There is also several T-shirts in this collection from different gay organizations, AIDS Memorial Quilt events, and a softball jacket
The David Helton Collection was donated to the LaBudde Special Collections in March of 2013. This collection is comprised of newspaper clippings about and photographs of the Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights on October 11, 1987 and the March on Washington for Lesbian, Gay and Bi Equal Rights and Liberation on April 25, 1993. The photos are of Kansas City participants and others in both marches. The newspaper clippings date from 1987 and feature coverage of the March and other associated activities. Included is a special edition of The Gay News-Telegraph detailing Missourians experience of the 1987 March, and a broadside advocating for an alternative view of the source of the AIDS epidemic.
The Larry Sullivan Collection was a gift of Larry Sullivan in May 2011. It contains a wide array of documentation related to the Gay and Lesbian Services Network, and specific elements of that organization such as Condom Crusaders, a group that supported safe sex within the LGBT community. Along with GLSN materials, representative documents from other groups and organizations, such as AIDS ACTION Committee and The Centers for Disease Control (CDC), can also be found here. Rounding off this collection is a wide variety of Articles, both scholastic and general reading, along with other documents, Flyers, Brochures, Informational Booklets, Newsletters, Periodicals, and Postcards, all related to AIDS awareness and prevention, as well as other issues regarding the LGBT community.
The Marc Hein Collection was gifted to LaBudde Special Collections in July, 2010 by his sister, Louanne Hein. The collection features a variety of writing by Hein, including samples of his two published columns, a myriad of correspondence, and two diaries. He kept three separate scrapbooks: one of his writing; one featuring his Pride-related activities; and one documenting his Gay Games experience. The collection also contains an array of newspaper and magazine clippings, detailing events in which he was involved locally and at the Gay Games, and some which center on AIDS research. The collection also includes an original drawing by Hein, a poster of the logo he created for the 1989 Pride Festival, held in Southmoreland Park.
The Pat Billings Collection was a gift of Lea Hopkins in March 2022. It is largely comprised of visual aids, newspaper clippings, photographs, awards and certificate.
The Steven R. Pierce Collection was gifted in July 2010 to LaBudde Special Collections by Pierce. The collection ranges in dates from 1983-1993 and contains a plethora of information dealing with the AIDS epidemic during a period when there was much trepidation and ignorance regarding this disease. The materials within this collection are focused on education; myth busting and bringing overall awareness to the forefront.
The Ordinance Project tells the story of the contentious struggle to pass an ordinance in Kansas City, Missouri prohibiting discrimination in housing, employment, and public accommodations based upon sexual orientation and HIV status. Emerging from the local chapter of the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power, activists struggled for nearly four years (1989-1993) to secure passage of the ordinance. Directed by UMKC doctoral candidate Austin R. Williams, the 90-minute film won the Celebration of Courage Award at the 2018 Kansas City LGBT Film Festival, and the Juror’s Choice Award at the 2019 Kansas International Film Festival.
